No one is perfect, not even heroes.
Short answer: Trials of Incomplete Heroes is a superhero sci-fi fantasy novel series beginning in a 2006 middle America setting, featuring monstrous hijinks.
Long answer: Trials of Incomplete Heroes primarily follows the adventures of Ryan Daily, a 15-year-old freshman boy in high school as he navigates a world far stranger than he could've imagined. His journey begins in 2006 in a Middle American town called Middletown. Unfortunately for him, nefarious actors have acquired a substance that transforms people into frightening monsters. For reasons I'll not disclose here, Ryan finds himself entangled in an insidious plot where he is transformed into a terrifying creature (you'll have to read the book to know what he becomes).
Post transformation, Ryan believes himself to be alone in the world, separated from friends and family. The transition between child and adult is difficult enough without the new monstrous additions. He must now come to terms with his new form and abilities while navigating a dangerous new world. Everything he once knew goes out the window as a normal life becomes unobtainable. Due to his frightening appearance, he must hide from the world so as not to cause a panic. All the while, a darker part of himself threatens to break free from his restraints.
His own struggles aside, monsters continue to appear; some of which may be in a similar situation to himself, while others are truly villainous. Rather than let monsters run rampant, he decides to fight against the forces creating the vicious beasts and prevent what happened to him from happening to anyone else. Harrowing adventures follow in which he must deal with his own inner turmoil while facing the transformed horrors (some of which may be far older than he realizes) that threaten humanity. He must forge new alliances and be careful with his trust as he fights to protect the innocent. As time goes on, an eerie sensation persists in the recesses of his mind; someone or something just might be orchestrating events for a far deeper purpose.
If you enjoy superheroes and monsters, this may just be the series for you. These books are not intended for small children. Recommended for at least 13+. This is a slightly darker take on a hero's journey as the main character is monstrous. However, it's not grim dark. These are not horror stories, yet they do skirt the line on occasion (We're dealing with monsters after all).
